Information About The "Best Buy" Extended Warranty Packages, Are They Trick Or What?

There I am sitting down at the Geek Squad counter at the Best Buy in Coquitlam. I'm waiting to get my personal computer that was pre-loaded with Norton 360 and working out a matter with a content blocker. The sales rep is scratching down figures attempting to sell a couple next to me 3 PCs for their kids for Xmas.

Ok Sir - he says. So you're looking at this total price $89 for Norton 360 $20 for recovery cd x 3, plus $30 each for a 2 year extended warranty offer. And so that's $90 TOTAL for the 2 years extended warranty which will cover ALL THREE Personal computers.

$30? Excuse me? Did I hear that correctly?

I lean in a bit more so I can hear the pitch as well. He repeats the numbers back to the wife who is actually estimating all of the totals and repeats $30 x 3 for a 2 year extended warranty for all three personal computers.

What the heck? I interfere with the sales pitch.

Excuse me, sorry to disrupt, but did I just hear you stipulate that a two year extended warranty is $30?

Indeed that is precise he claims. My manager approved that.

Really? I say. You suggest the same lady that just billed me $190 for a 3 year extended warranty?

I call the lady over and present her my bill. What kind of business are you folks operating here? I say.

So permit me to get this straight... A 2 year extended warranty for THREE PCs is $90 and a 3 year extended warranty for ONE personal computer is $190?

I ask to talk to the General Manager and the woman departs for about 15 minutes.

She comes back and says that the General Manager has given me a 50% discount on my extended warranty package. I request to talk with him myself and she is gone for another 10 minutes. In this period I'm contemplating to myself, these guys are total tricksters.

The General Manager comes over and then I put out my hand to shake his hand and he looks at me with this serious look and draws an Arnold Schwarzenegger "HE MAN" grip and almost crushes my hand. He takes this really strict stance like we're going to have a "scrap" or something.

What on earth is this - intimidation tactics at the "Best Buy" in Coquitlam - I'm thinking?

He proceeds to give me a $50 refund and gets into this volume purchasing spiel and tells me that if I buy 3 computers I will acquire this type of reduction as well. By this period - I'm contemplating to myself, these people are total cons. So I proceed to the checkout to re-crunch the numbers in my head to try and figure precisely what has just gone down.

I call the General Manager over again and say - Did I hear you just give me $50 off when you're Manager just presented me 50% discount?

$50.....50% - I must have gotten the figures confused he says.

I don't think so. I request a full refund. All I could say is BUYER BEWARE!! If I hadn't seen it myself I would have never believed it could happen for real.

What I think to be the case is that the sales managers are skilled to eye up the buyer - look at their clothes, their shoes and their jewelry to figure out what they feel they might scam for each deal and what they can get away with. It seems that at the Best Buy in Coquitlam - a 2 year warranty can go for as little as $30 if you're a couple purchasing 3 computers and if you're a business man putting on a Rolex, you can expect to pay $190 for 3 years. WOW!
